Chapter 2 Roles & Vision

In the last chapter, we discussed the primary deterrents to overcoming your loser mindset: lack of confidence, perfectionism, and lack of vision. The good news is there is one singular antidote, Vision.

When you have a defined mental picture for your life your confidence in your future increases, you stop running towards other people’s finish lines, and you have the motivation to achieve what is singularly yours to have.

I used to get overwhelmed by the question of why am I here? What is my unique mission? I would attend all of the workshops and listen to all of the Youtube videos that promised me an answer to that lifelong question. I honestly dont think there is anyone who is 100% confident that they have their “why” and “mission” figured out, just people who are good at faking it. Instead of attempting to find your cosmic answer to your life’s purpose, we are going to get more granular to give us a higher likelihood of hitting the mark.

The first step I take when I am trying to define what I want for my future is to envision my life more like a movie. I ask myself, “what are the roles that I play?”

With your roles defined, take them individually and ask yourself in the next 3 -5 years who would I like to become in this area? Not what will my peers do, but rather what do I want? No matter how silly.

  • Close your eyes and envision the version of you that would give you peace, joy, and fulfillment.

    • What is she doing?

    • What has she achieved?

    • How would the people who matter most describe her?

    • What strengths is she using and what obstacles has she overcome?

Take a piece of paper and write down your responses…

Now it’s time to simplify.

With your roles on the table and the future plots you see for each role in your perfect movie defined, combine your roles into 3 main buckets. Below you can see how I divided mine up into self, spiritual, and work. Under the category of “Self” falls my fitness, behavioral, and health goals. “Spiritual” encompasses anything related to growing closer to the Lord. “Work” is anything I engage in that creates income.

What this assignment enabled you to do was create your own vision for your future, one that is compelling and uniquely yours. With your roles and vision defined we can move into our next step.

See you in the next chapter…

My Life’s Purpose is not what I do, or the roles I play.
IT is what happens in others when I do what I am meant to do.
